Class Information
English
I / Compact English
Almost all of the freshmen take either English I or Compact English. English
I is literature based focusing on literary elements. Students are expected to read two books per trimester outside of
class. There will be a different book project for each book. Compact English is for students on the accelerated
track. The biggest difference between the classes is the amount of reading. Compacted students read at least three
times as much as English I students.
English Comprehension
Mrs. Goedken and Mrs. Pillard co-teach
English Comprehension, which is a reading class. This is an excellent class for students who struggle with reading.
It is a one trimester class but can be taken three times. If a student takes trimester one, he or she cannot take trimester
one again. This class counts toward English graduation requirements but does not count as an English class for acceptance
into a college.
AP Lit
and AP Lang
Mrs. Goedken also teaches AP Lit (senior class) and AP Lang (junior
class). These two classes are offered with the opportunity to take an AP exam in May. If a student earns a 3,
4,or 5 on the exam, most colleges will offer college credit. There is a heavy focus on vocabulary with several different
novels read throughout the year. Many different essays are written with an emphasis on literary analysis.
Mass Communications
Last but not least, mass communications produces "The
Buccaneer Banner". This student written newspaper is printed almost every week of the school year in the Winthrop paper,
The News.
